Movie Review : Julie and Julia

Based on the two true stories of Julie Powell and Julia Child, the movie is also about my two greatest passions – Cooking and Blogging. To be perfectly honest I had never heard about the movie till about a week ago, when friends of mine saw it and told me about it. I would have not downloaded and seen it so soon unless both Ashish and Lisa Kaul had not told me what an amazing movie it was separately.

So using my new found knowledge of bit torrents I downloaded the movie and saw it. For those of you wondering why I could not just buy the DVD, the answer lies in the fact that I live in a little town on the border of Nepal where it is impossible to get any English language DVDs. You may catch some stray Hindi movie titles here, but believe me Bhojpuri rules the roost.

Any how coming back to Julie and Julia. Most of you who are fond of cooking would be familiar with the famous book the Art of French Cooking by Julia Child. It is this book which gives Julie Powell the idea of cooking through all the recipes and blogging about it. That’s how the story traces both the lives of these interesting women.

You learn how Julia Child graduated from the Cordon Bleu despite the headmistress hating her! A lot of anecdotes from the past are laced with relevance in the present. You see Julie Powell trying to deal with 9/11 victims in her little cubicle. The movies runs through the everyday events in the lives of both ladies and keeps you entertained with the sheer innocence that both the ladies have embodied.

The movie is a must watch if you are woman who is wondering what the real purpose of her existence is. There is so much you will be able to identify with the two ladies.

  3. Dear Ma’am.
I could not workout the site of the subject movie. So was not able to comment. Nevertheless, in case possible, i will not refrain myself in extending request to you to give me a copy of same.

If you are keen movie watcher and so for your taste for books, then attempt to see a French movie(with English subtitles) “The man who loved women”. It normally is played on one of the movie channels(may be Warners). I being a occasional viewer of TV, thus is not able to recollect the channel. However, the site is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Man_Who_Loved_Women_%281977_film%29 . Fantastically, the plot of movie is same as of Khuswant Singh’s “The company of Women”. Is this a case of Plagiarism? and if so who is to be accounted being a plagiarist ?
    Wish you happy blogging!
